EXCERPTS FROM A LETTER OF LEO MARCHUTZ TO HIS BROTHER ALFRED, DESCRIBING THE WORK INVOLVED IN CREATING HIS EDITION OF THE BIBLE. THE LETTER IS DATED : AUGUST 14, 1947.

(.......) I have a tremendous job on the way, and very hard work, but I enjoy it enormously. The last three weeks my friend and myself worked so hard, that he fell ill, which gives me some breath too and it is therefore I am answering your letter immediately, because generally I am home at 12 p.m. to start early in the morning again. But if we are able ro realize, what we intend to, it is well worth all the trouble we take.
The first idea has been changed entirely, it is now to be a book with the lithographs in the text. We will probably be obliged to undertake the composition of the text also, that is to pull together personnally all the letters composing the text to be printed, because no professional printer is able or willing to do this in a satisfactory way, because much too costly for him.
But then it will be something unique in this way, a book entirely made by the Artists. About the quality of the drawings, each person having seen them is enthousiastic about. The trouble now is to get them perfectly well on the stone and then to print them in a satisfactory way. That is terribly difficult, you may believe me, and asks for terrible patience, which – happily – I have. Therefore, I have to make about twenty drawings on a paper which is hard to handle and has not to be touched with a finger, you imagine ! One of the twenty drawings is then chosen for the stone – and if all goes allright, which is not always the case, it appears splendidly on the stone. Then there are about fifteen most delicate operations before the drawing is ready to print. And so far about seventy drawings are intended for the book. Then there have to be made 200 prints of always two pages together, all together about eight thousand. That may give you an idea what is waiting for us. Still, for the moment – we are at the beginning, just getting in touch with all the difficulties.
The place we are working is nearly one hour ride with bicycle from here up in the hills the other side of Aix. It is the first time in my life I am undertaking a work without having money troubles in my mind...

EXTRAITS D’UNE LETTRE DE LÉO MARCHUTZ À SON FRÈRE ALFRED, DÉCRIVANT LE TRAVAIL DE PRÉPARATION POUR L’ÉDITION DE LA BIBLE. LA LETTRE EST DATÉE DU 14 AOÛT 1947.
